During operations in New Guinea during 1942 and 1943, it was found that a need existed for a vehicle with superior cross country capability for carrying stores. In late 1943 a
prototype tracked truck, using components of the MG carrier, was built and trialled. An interesting feature of the design was
the hinged front idler used for track displacement when steering, which superceded the moving centre bogie unit of the MG carrier. Although the vehicle had several faults, it out-performed a jeep and trailer on boggy ground, even with a 1
tonne load.
A revised vehicle was built in 1944 and 12 pre-production models followed. Further trials found that whilst performance was excellent, its capabilities were limited by inadequate braking and steering, and a low fording height of 530 mm.
The Tracked Truck could be used to carry up to 1100 kg of various stores, or could tow a six-pounder anti-tank gun or 25 poundergun-howitzer with ammunition. With further development, it would have proven an ideal vehicle for use in jungle
areas.
The project lapsed at the end of the war. This vehicle is one of the pre-production models
